Axolotl Art Adventure (Ages 9–17)
Tuesday, August 18 | 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM
Have your tween or teen step into the colorful, curious world of one of nature's most enchanting creatures! With their permanent smiles, feathery gills, and almost mythical ability to regenerate, axolotls have captured the imaginations of artists and nature lovers alike. This workshop is a little bit longer, a little bit bolder, a little bit more in-depth, and a LOT bigger in creativity for the older students. Even older kids love a unique stuffed animal, too!
During this immersive one-day workshop, we'll draw inspiration from these extraordinary amphibians as we spend the day creating beautiful, handcrafted artwork using a variety of artist-quality materials.
Each participant will choose a 16-inch plush axolotl in either pink or blue to hand-stuff and accompany them throughout the day before heading home as part of the experience. Because honestly, you're never too old to love a plush stuffed animal that is as unique as this one!
They will paint and personalize a wooden keepsake box while embellishing it with a handcrafted polymer clay lid - and/or create a charming polymer clay ring dish (using a clay axolotl template) to treasure for years to come. Learning about good craftsmanship, the students will add new techniques and tricks for making polymer clay items to their creative arsenal.
We'll also explore the magic of watercolor through a vibrant axolotl painting, experimenting with shimmering watercolor crystal techniques (using Brusho crystals) and the beauty of negative space painting to create luminous effects that are both expressive and unique.
Throughout the day, we'll weave in fascinating facts about these remarkable creatures while encouraging students to slow down, explore, experiment, and enjoy the creative process. Whether your tween or teen already loves axolotls or is discovering them for the first time, this workshop promises a day filled with imagination, craftsmanship, and artistic discovery.
Students should pack a lunch, wear clothes that can get a little messy, and come ready for a day of creativity, curiosity, and hands-on making in our welcoming studio. Weather dependent, we will have time to explore the creek and get wet...
