PAINT LIKE the MASTERS: Oil Painting Mastercopy Class! 
Tuesdays, September 22nd to October 27th - 12:00 to 3:00 PM
(5 sessions plus a free bonus class for making up any missed classes or adding finishing touches...)
 
All Levels are invited to develop their skills while recreating an Old Master’s Painting! Join this fun and informative series of classes as a way to learn or advance your oil painting skills. You will learn the steps to oil painting and create your own copy (or interpretation) of a famous Old Master’s Painting of your choosing.
 
Individual attention will be given to each student’s level of skill. Class will cover how to start a painting, color mixing, mediums, brush techniques, etc. for beginners, while experienced painters can get started on their Master Copy with expert guidance along the way. We will be working with paintings by Master Artists’ whose work is copyright free and therefore now “in the public domain.” Master Copy paintings are created from any of the works of the Old Masters from over 70 years ago. (i.e., Picasso’s work is NOT permitted as it is not in the public domain.) If in question, simply Google, “Are (artist’s name) paintings copyright free? You want the answer to be (Artist’s) paintings are in the public domain.
 
Suitable for beginners as well as advanced painters. Bring a photo or print of your chosen Master Artist’s painting to the first class. If undecided you may bring several possibilities to class which we can discuss.

Where to Shop: Blick.com or JacksonsArt.com recommended (order well in advance). Please do not be intimidated by this list. If you are an established painter, you likely already own most of these items. If you are new to oil painting, these items will be all you need to continue your paintng journey!
 
⚠️ Critical Class Rules No Student-Grade Paints: Avoid student lines (like Gamblin 1980, Utrecht, or colors named w/ "Hue"). Their pigments are diluted with fillers that negatively affect color-mixing and the painting experience. No Water-Soluble Oils: Please bring traditional oils only. 100% Solvent-Free Studio: No Gamsol, Turpenoid, Mineral Spirits, or Liquin allowed. (See Non-Toxic Solvent alternatives below)
🎨 1. Oil Paints (Artist Grade Only) - One tube of each Recommended affordable professional brands: M. Graham, Winsor-Newton Artist’s Professional, or Gamblin Artist’s Oils. Warm Red: Cadmium Red Light (or Medium) OR Pyrrole Red Cool Red: Quinacridone Rose OR PERMANENT Alizarin Crimson Warm Yellow: Cadmium Yellow Deep OR Indian Yellow Cool Yellow: Cadmium Yellow Light OR Lemon Yellow Warm Blue: Ultramarine Blue Cool Blue: Cerulean Blue OR Phthalo Blue Green Shade Earth/Darks: Raw Umber and Ivory Black White: Titanium White ACRYLIC PAINT - Liquitex: Transparent Red Oxide - small tube - a non-toxic way to create the UNDERPAINTING - students can also opt to start their painting directly on canvas, thus not needing this item
 
🧰 2. Required Tools & Studio Supplies
Substrates:  Bring a quality pre-primed stretched canvas in size proportionate to the Master’s Painting you are copying. Alternately you may choose Ampersand pre-primed Gessobord.
 
Portable Stand Easel: Smaller desktop easels provided for use at Studio but not suitable for larger canvases or boards.
 
Palette Knife: Must be flexible with a rounded tip for mixing. (e.g. Blick Painting Knife Large Rounded Spatula 96). You will use this forever!
 
Palette: Masterson’s Palette Box with Gray Palette Paper Pad OR a clean pizza box lined with wax paper (great free way to transport wet paintings!).
 
Medium: Gamblin Solvent Free Gel OR M. Graham Alkyd Walnut Oil. (note M.Graham sells 2 pack** w/one Oil and one Alkyd Oil - fast drying) Brush Cleaner (Quick clean during Class): M. Graham Walnut Oil** OR Linseed Oil (used to wipe brushes between colors - solvent free). Jars: Two sm. or med. glass jars w/lids - only ONE if using Gamblin Solvent Free Gel medium (e.g., empty jelly jars - Bonne Maman jars are great.)
 
Clean-up: Paper towels. Brushes can be wrapped in paper towels for thorough cleaning at home. Optional for home brush cleaning: The Master's Brush Cleaner in 2.5 oz cake or bar soap is excellent, Dawn Dish Detergent also cuts into oil and cleans brushes - both solvent free!
 
🖌️ 3. Brushes Bring the brushes you already have and prefer working with. Avoid cheap student brushes (like Artist's Loft or Store brands). Quality brushes intended for Oil Painting are key to successful painting results. If you need to buy new brushes, Rosemary & Co. offers the best quality and price. You can order them through their U.S. distributor, Wind River Arts, at 972-342-4947 or windriverarts.com. RECOMMENDED: Ivory or Eclipse Line: Flats or Filberts in sizes 2, 4, 6, and 8. Long Lasting, excellent and affordable. Plus an optional but fantastic blending brush, Goat Hair MUNDY MOP 3/8” is a good size. Others are available.
 
💰 💡4. Beginner Budget Tips (How to Save Money) For beginners looking to minimize setup costs, you can substitute these items: Palette: Use a free, clean pizza box lined with wax paper instead of buying a Masterson's Palette Box and Gray Palette Paper pad. Pizza Boxes, UNUSED: Great way to transport wet paintings back and forth without disturbing paint and available in many sizes. Most pizza places will give you a box or two for free, especially if you first order a pizza. It’s best to offer to pay for the box though. Brushes: Just bring whatever brushes you already have at home (provided they are not student grade), rather than buying recommended Rosemary & Co. options. Paints: Buy M. Graham oils. A top-tier but affordable professional grade.
