Oil Pastel Exploration:
Color, Texture, and Technique: Adult Art Workshop
Wednesday, June 3rd 6:30 - 8:30
Explore the vibrant, painterly possibilities of oil pastels in this beginner-friendly workshop. Learn essential techniques like layering, blending, and mark-making to create rich color, depth, and texture.
Using a charming farm animal as your subject, (we will be using either a cow or chicken as references in this workshop... you choose at the workshop from images provided) you’ll be guided step-by-step in creating a lively, dimensional piece while gaining confidence with this unique medium. We’ll also cover materials, product differences, and how to finish and seal your work.
Taught by Tracy Taylor, this workshop will be full of insight and technique as you are guided through a relaxed, creative evening and discover a fresh approach to oil pastels.
Participants will go home with 1 finished, frameworthy piece of art, a materials list, a 2nd board, and a piece of white transfer paper to enable you to get started on a second, matching farm animal to complete your set!
About the Artist
Tracy is a multidisciplinary artist and founder of The Free Range Art Studio, with a creative practice shaped by over three decades of exploration across design and art.
She began her career in fashion, earning her degree cum laude before working in the fashion industry and later opening a boutique known for its hand-painted clothing, unique designs, and curated artisan accessories from around the world.
Tracy has always been drawn to handcrafted items. Her own designs were highlighted daily in her boutique...and beyond the clothing and jewelry she designed and sold, the store displays were a secret passion. This passion evolved into larger-scale painting of custom furniture, and handcrafted chandeliers for private collectors, reflecting a continued interest in surface, texture, and material.
Today, Tracy's focus is on teaching - creating an environment where art feels both elevated and accessible. Her approach emphasizes process, layering, and intuitive mark-making, encouraging students to move beyond hesitation and into a more expressive, personal way of working.
Drawn to color, organic forms, and unexpected combinations, Tracy’s work - and the way she teaches - celebrates the beauty of the unconventional and the quietly transformative nature of making. Tracy loves guiding students to create expressive, layered work they didn’t think they could achieve - and can't wait to teach others how to work with oil pastels!
